Afghanistan’s government says a diplomat kidnapped by militants in Pakistan two years ago has been released and is back safe in the country.
Ambassador—designate Abdul Khaliq Farahi was released in eastern Afghanistan late Saturday and returned to Kabul. He met Sunday with President Hamid Karzai, his office said. The diplomat was let go after a joint effort by Afghan and Pakistani officials.
Mr. Farahi was heading from the Afghan Consulate towards his home in the city of Peshawar on September 22, 2008, when gunmen stopped the vehicle and killed his driver.
