A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck off Chile’s central-north area, but authorities say no injuries or damage are reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake’s epicentre was 88 km north of Coquimbo, Chile, and had a depth of 61 km. It struck on Wednesday, shortly after 4 p.m. local time.

The Interior Ministry Emergency Office says no damages to infrastructure have been reported but some phone lines in the region are down.

The quake was mildly felt in the capital Santiago, where it shook buildings and in the port of Valparaiso.
