An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 was reported near central Peru’s coast.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor hit at 3 a.m. (0800 GMT) on Wednesday about 10 miles (15 kilometers) northeast of Chincha Alta, and its depth was 30 miles (48 kilometers).
