At least 24 people were killed and more than double that number injured in a blast that ripped through a market of Khyber tribal agency on Saturday morning. The explosive material was packed into a car at the market and the blast triggered had a cascading effect because it took place near a shop selling gas cylinders.

The blast took place at Landi Kotal, about seven km from the Torkham border crossing point with Afghanistan. Eyewitnesses claimed that someone drove the car into the marketplace just minutes before the explosion. No outfit had claimed responsibility till late in the evening.

Doctors feared the death toll could go up as at least 10 of the injured were in a critical condition and had to be shifted from the local hospital in Landi Kotal to Peshawar.
