Fourteen children were feared killed when a van carrying students fell into a canal near Mirpur in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Friday, police said.
The van, which was going from Alibeg town to Mirpur, fell into the Jhelum canal early this morning after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Bhimbher district Superintendent of Police Chaudhry Munir Hussain said there were 17 students in the van when the accident occurred at 6:30 am on Friday.
Three children survived and seven bodies had been recovered by rescue teams and army divers, he said.
The other children were feared dead, police said.
“The search operation for the remaining bodies is underway,” Hussain said.
Supply of water to the canal had been blocked to help rescuers recover the remaining bodies.
The whereabouts of the driver had not yet been ascertained as he had either drowned or escaped by jumping out of the van, Hussain said.
