Haldiram owner's plea for bail rejected

March 11, 2010 01:43 am | Updated 01:43 am IST - KOLKATA:

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday rejected the bail application of the owner of Haldiram, Prabhu Shankar Agarwal. He was recently sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court for conspiring and attempting to murder a tea-stall owner five years ago.

Agarwal's counsel said that although the High Court had rejected the petition, the reason for doing so was not cited.

“Further course of action can only be decided on after obtaining a copy of the order and knowing the reason. If needed, we will move the plea in Supreme Court.”

Agarwal and four others — Gopal Tiwari, Arun Khandelwal, Manoj Sharma and Raju Sonkar — were found guilty for the crime committed on March 30, 2005.According to the charge sheet, Agarwal tried to evict a tea-stall owner in front of one of the outlets in the city's Burrabazar area. He initially offered money and later threatened him. On March 30, 2005 Tiwari and his accomplices raided the tea-stall and fired at the owner's nephew, Pramod Sharma, who survived.

A sessions court awarded the life sentence and 10 years' rigorous imprisonment to the five on January 29. Tiwari was also found guilty under the Arms Act.

“The bail application of others, barring Khandelwal, was also supposed to have been moved today [Wednesday], but Agarwal's was the only petition that was moved,” counsel said.
