Workshop on elephant census held

More than a 100 Forest Department officials from various districts in Tamil Nadu attended the second State-level workshop on all India synchronised elephant population estimation held at Theppakadu on Wednesday.

The workshop was held for officials of various ranks, including Field Director, Conservators of Forests, District Forest Officers, Rangers, and Foresters.

V.A. Saravanan, Deputy Director of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, told The Hindu that the all-India study of elephant populations will begin on May 15, and continue till May 20.

He said that scientific methods, including using of line transects and GPS coordinates, will be used to estimate the population.

Raghuram Singh, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Project Tiger, who is the nodal officer for the population estimation exercise in the State, inaugurated the workshop.

He told reporters here that the scientific estimation of elephant population will help in coming up with measures to mitigate man-animal conflicts.
