The Departments of Agriculture and Agriculture Engineering has decided to create six check dams at as many villages, and distribute seeds at subsidised rates to help farmers.

The check dams are planned at an estimated outlay of ₹ 25 lakh.

They will come up across the streams at Pothampalayam village under Avinashi block, Keeranur village under Kangayam block, Kalipalayam village under Mulanur block, Ettiveerampalayam and Merkupathy villages under Tirupur block, and Velliraveli village under Uthukuli block.

The check dams are planned to harvest runaway water, which will help recharge the groundwater table, said Mohamed Iqbal, Joint Director of Agriculture.

This will help 2,739 farmers in the six villages, and their surrounding areas.

We have identified 6,308 farmers in 23 village panchayats for distribution of seeds of various crops at a subsidised rate. They have been identified after a survey carried out across the district, said agriculture department officials.
