Illegal sale of liquor in Karumanthampatti was rampant, alleged The Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam here on Monday.

In a petition to the District Collector T.N. Hariharan at the weekly grievances redress day programme, Su. Palanisamy president of the Sangam alleged that after the closure of Tasmac shops, a few influential persons brought liquor bottles from Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry and were selling them at a premium rate.

Liquor bottles costing ₹ 40 were being sold for ₹180 even at tea shops in Karumathampatti, Annur, Sulur, and Kovilpalayam.

Liquor was available at many roadside food joints at Karumathampatti, Somanur bus stand, Mill Road, Rayarpalayam, Semmandapalayam, Sulur, Vagairayampalayam, Chettipalayam, Kovil Palayam, Kalappatti, Pasur and Ganesapuram, Mr. Palanisamy said adding that some of the officials too were aiding the illegal sales.

The Hindu Rights Kazhagam submitted a petition asking the Collector to increase the police posts to check drunken driving especially at Kottaimedu, Karumbukkadai, Ukkadam, and Aathupalam.

The Aadhi Tamizhar Peravai urged the government to allow submission of application for admission under Right To Education in private schools. Government should instruct the private schools to keep a notice board in front of their school on the number of seats reserved for admission under the RTE Act.
