Heavy rain lashed various parts of Puducherry on Saturday under the impact of a low-pressure trough in the Bay of Bengal throwing normal life out of gear and leading to water-logging in several areas.

Official sources said Puducherry received a total of 16.2 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday. The city recorded 17.1 mm rainfall from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on Saturday.

The continuous downpour forced people to stay indoors. Fishermen in most of the coastal villages in Puducherry stayed away from the sea.

A tree on Thyagaraja Street was uprooted in strong winds and rains that lashed on Friday night.

Many official programmes scheduled for Saturday had to be either cut short or cancelled owing to the heavy rain.

The incessant rain also played spoilsport with the weekend plans of tourists from Chennai and Bengaluru.

Many of them had to remain holed up in their hotel rooms throughout the day. Mercifully, the rains ceased in the evening bringing alive the thoroughfares.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, isolated rain or thundershowers may occur over North coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Sunday.
