Leader of the Opposition V. Vaithilingam on Tuesday urged the authorities to expedite solution to the stray dog menace in the Union Territory and adjoining areas.

Responding to the news report in this newspaper on the street dog menace, Mr. Vaithilingam said the government should create special shelters for the care of stray dogs and ask the animal activists to feed the dogs.

He said, “At least 100 dogs are roaming in every street of Puducherry and this had made it difficult for the walkers or motor-cycle riders to navigate through the street. We are receiving so many complaints from residents in our constituency.”

He urged the animal rights activists to extend proactive cooperation in the larger interest of public.

Shonar Joshi, Director of AuroJeeva, a special initiative of Sri Aurobindo Society said MLAs are right in their place to ask the administration to deal with the situation. But they should be aware of the facts and demand for sterilisation and not the removal or killing of dogs — both are illegal under section 428 & 429 of the IPC.

“The authorities have on multiple occasions caught dogs which are already sterilised and also dropped off dogs in locations different from where they were picked up originally — this is utterly absurd, not to mention completely illegal,” she alleged.
