Unesco bioethics unit launched at PIMS

Team from Israel to train senior members of the faculty

The Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Puducherry has established the first Unesco Bioethics Unit of the International Network of the Unesco Chair in Bioethics, Haifa, Israel, in Puducherry.

As part of this initiative, the accredited 3T-IBHSc bioethics training programme is being conducted to introduce Medical and Nursing faculty to teach the modern Vertically Integrated Bioethics Curriculum based on the core curriculum, which reflects the 15 principles enshrined in the Unesco’s Universal declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights.

The Course Director, Renu G’Boy Varghese, Head and Chair, Asia Pacific Division, Unesco Chair in Bioethics, Haifa handed over the writs for the establishment of the Unesco Bioethics Unit to the Director- Principal of PIMS, Renu G’Boy Varghese.

A dedicated team of faculty under Mary Mathew, the Head of Indian Program of Unesco Chair of Bioethics, Haifa who are committed to the spread of establishing a curriculum of bioethics in India, have come to train the faculty comprising of senior professors from various disciplines of medicine and nursing.

PIMS, through this Bioethics Unit, proposes to sensitise all health professionals in and around Puducherry to the bioethics principles.
