A third year MBBS student at Jipmer has filed his first patent for an innovation targeted towards helping stroke and comatose patients.

The sixth semester undergraduate medical student, along with the faculty from the department of neurology filed the patent at the Chennai patent office through the IPR consultants.

Jipmer administrators believe the positive outcome came about so soon only because Dr. S.C. Parija, Jipmer Director, had initiated the establishment of a Jipmer Innovation Facilitation Unit (JIFU) and IPR cell to facilitate innovation for excellence and affordable health care.

A series of workshops and training programmes had been conducted to sensitise and train students and faculty in the field of innovation, intellectual property rights and the process of applying patents.

Earlier, a few faculty members too had come up with innovative ideas and filed patents and with the undergraduate students joining the stream, it is another stride towards Jipmer ’s efforts to scale up research and innovation.

Complimenting the student and faculty, the Jipmer Innovation Facility Unit and Jipmer Patent Cell team, Dr. Parija said that once it was armed with patents, Jipmer would partner with industries in designing and bringing out diagnostic kits, procedures and treatment modalities for better patient care.
