Demanding removal of Lieutenant Governor Virendra Kataria, activists from people rights movements and political organisations on Monday staged a demonstration in front of Raj Nivas on Monday. Police blocked them from proceeding further near the Head Post office.

The protestors raised slogans against Mr.Kataria for allegedly acting against the government elected by the public. G. A. Jagannathan, secretary of People’s Living Right Movement and G. Sugumaran, secretary Federation for People’s Rights, Puducherry and leaders of 16 organisations participated in the protest which lasted for more than 40 minutes.

Mr. Jagannathan alleged that Mr. Kataria has been waging a shadow war against the democratically elected government and demanded his recall by the Centre. The LG’s actions militated against the spirit of the Constitution of India which stipulates that power is vested with elected representatives alone.

Mr. Sugumaran accused the Governor of acting in contravention of the oath of office. Using his official power, he appointed his family member to Lalit Kala Akademi. “He has been continuously adopting an anti-people attitude and he should come forward to tender his resignation”, he demanded.

Meanwhile, one organisation has come out with a wholehearted support to Mr. Kataria.

The Pondichery Engineering College Parents Association said the present Governor acted impartially and had worked hard for better law and order situation in the State. “Hence the demand to change Mr.Kataria should be given up,” said its president Kaliaperumal.
