The Puducherry police and the Indian Coast Guard conducted a security drill, ‘Operation Hamla,’ along the Union Territory’s coastline on Wednesday aimed at assessing the preparedness of the forces in the event of a terror attack.
As part of the exercise, a strict vigil was mounted along the coast and also on mid-sea. It was being done in a synchronised manner by the police personnel, the Coast Guard and the Navy to assess threat perception, said N. Somasundaram, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard, Puducherry
Joint patrolling was taken up by the Coast Guard and the marine police. Surveillance was increased along the coastline from Marakkanam to Cuddalore to monitor the movements of suspicious elements.
Mr. Somasundaram said that the exercise, held once in every six months, focused on coastal security this time. The Coast Guard had formed two groups - red group to act as terrorists, and blue group, symbolising security forces.
The operation would continue till 6 p.m. on Thursday.
