Keezhur, a nondescript village near here, which symbolises Puducherry’s Independence, is finally getting its long deserved attention.

The village which was neglected without any maintenance till date was spruced up to receive the Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi and Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on the occasion of the 55{+t}{+h}De Jure Transfer Day.

Keezhur was the venue for the referendum in October 1954 and the overwhelming verdict favoured liberation of Puducherry and the merger of French establishments to the Indian union. The regions of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam which were the French establishments in India became part of the Indian union through a referendum on October 18, 1954 .

Around 178 members of the then Representative Council had participated in the referendum held at Keezhur, situated on the Puducherry border and 170 of them favoured the merger of French establishments with the Indian union.
