Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Sunday said that the work for desilting the Sorapet tank will be taken up under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

As part of Ms. Bedi’s weekend morning round-up, she, along with her Raj Nivas staff, cycled to Sorapet village.

A release said Ms. Bedi said de-silting and replenishment of the tank under MNREGS would also ensure sharing of benefits by the local community.

The youth association in the village volunteered to take part in the desilting works.

An official of the Public Works Department said shutters would be constructed to conserve rainwater. A survey would be conducted to recover lands leading to supply channels that had been allegedly encroached.

The ieutenant Governor said the Commissioner of Mannadipet Commune would get in touch with the Deputy Conservator of Forests to plant saplings along the bund of the tank. The progress of work of desilting the tank and ponds will be documented by the villagers, she said.

She advised villagers to lodge written complaints with the Deputy Commissioner of Excise over the presence of bars and liquor shops close to State highways.
