A selfie clicked by a functionary of the ruling Congress party during the rendition of national anthem at a government school caused a flutter here on Tuesday.

Educational institutions across the city had organised a mass singing of the national anthem at 11 a.m. following a directive from the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Amid avid participation by the students of Thiruvalluvar Government Girls Higher Secondary School, a selfie savvy volunteer of the Congress went ahead with taking pictures even as the students and teachers stood in rapt attention singing the national anthem.

The selfie clicked by the person, who was identified as the Orleanpet Block Congress president, drew the attention of the officials of the Education department and teachers. However, none of the officials came forward to restrain him from taking the selfie. The incident which went viral on Whatsapp virtually marred the sanctity of the function organised by the Education department, those who attended the meeting say. What disturbed the onlookers most was that this had happened in the presence of Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and DMK Legislator R. Siva.
