A piping hot cup of gruel is the perfect recipe for boosting your energy level. Those visiting K.K. Nagar Uzhavar Sandhai on Sundays get this fantastic treat.

Sri Agathiar Sanmarga Sangam, a service organisation, serves this amazing potion to the tired customers every week. After shopping for vegetables for about 30 to 45 minutes, the tired customers are seen lugging their purchase to the parking lot.

And a cup of herbal potion with an irresistible flavour gives them the much needed relief.

The volunteers of the sangam say the gruel is prepared using medicinal herbs.

“We distribute the gruel every Sunday near the Uzhavar Sandhai” says R. Ramkumar, coordinator of the Mannachanallur unit of the Sangam. He explained the medicinal value of the gruel which comprised ‘thippili’, pepper, ginger and garlic.

Religious sentiment is a powerful tool in Indian society. The office of Mayiladuthurai municipality is located near a narrow lane where people emptied their bladder. To kep the place clean, the authorities adopted a tried and tested method. They placed a flex board containing the images of gods and goddesses, of course with a warning to those peeing in the area. And, it has worked.

Several parts of Karaikal town and its neighbouring areas present an unhygienic appearance, particularly with regard to dumping of plastic waste and bottles. Though the municipality clears the garbage regularly, absence of proper solid waste management system in this town has been the main cause for the town looking ugly. With a view to tiding over the problem, a team of police personnel extended their assistance in keeping the town clean.

They not only collected the garbage at major thoroughfares but also immediately disposed them, much to the delight of the residents. The drive formed part of the responsiveness of the police administration to the Lieutenant-Governor Kiran Bedi’s call to keep the Union Territory clean and tidy to attract tourists.
