Activists of the All-India Democratic Women Association and Democratic Youth Federation of India and Student Federation of India on Sunday held a rail roko at the Puducherry Railway Station, demanding a rollback of the rail fare hike.

The activists marched into the station and squatted on the tracks raising slogans against the BJP-led government at the Centre.

A train coming in from Chennai had to be detained at the approach for some time until the tracks were cleared.

According to the pro-Left organisations, the hike was anti-democratic as the government had announced the hike in passenger fare and freight rate ahead of the Parliament session.

About 50 activists, including two women, were arrested by the police and later released in the evening.
