Following an Intelligence Bureau warning of possible infiltration of terrorists through coastal areas, the Puducherry Police have stepped vigil across the coastal areas where large number of domestic and foreign tourists throng the beautiful beaches.
In the wake of the Coast Guard intercepting a suspect Pakistani fishing boat which blew itself up in the Arabian Sea, the apparatus here has been put on high alert by a nationwide missive by intelligence authorities.
To beef up security in the coastal areas, the police conducted a consultative meeting with fishermen and sought their active engagement in maintaining constant vigil on suspicious activity. The police also asked them to pass on information about any suspicious movements in the coastal area.
N. Ravikumar, Superintendent of Police, North told The Hindu , “We asked the fishermen to pass on information about any suspicious movements, vessels or boats, item or food material flouting on the sea.”
Police also advised the fishermen to inform on suspicious persons who reside at new colonies in fishing villages. Similar consultation meeting with mechanised owners will be held soon. Police also sent circulars warning the managements of beach resorts not to allow guests on to the beach side after 6 p.m.
The beach resort owners were asked to watch the beach area all around by deploying necessary men into the area.
The police officials asked them to install closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) to monitor all places of their resorts.
Police also are doing checks moving on the roads near coastal areas.
