The territorial administration will give thrust to crime and criminal tracking networking system (CCTNS), installation of closed circuit television cameras, procurement of advanced wireless equipment, and traffic improvement work as part of modernisation of the police force.
Director-General of Police S.K. Gautam told The Hindu that the administration had proposed a Rs. 10-crore modernisation programme to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
The priority, he said, was completion of CCTNS, a nationwide project to create a comprehensive and integrated system for effective policing and sharing data of crimes and criminals among 14,000 police stations throughout the country.
“We have achieved half of the digitisation programme and the rest will be completed very soon. Once completed, it will be easier for the police to track down a criminal,” Mr. Gautam said.
The modernisation fund would be utilised to replace the wireless equipment and take up traffic improvement.
Mr. Gautam said the rising number of accidents had become a cause of concern and a number of steps, including changes in the design of roads, were being considered.
Traffic signals would be installed at Ezhai Mariamman Kovil, Maduvapet, Latha Steel, Villianur, Murungapakkam, Thavalakuppam, Madagadipet and Jipmer. To ensure better safety, more areas would be brought under CCTV coverage, he said.
