Reacting to allegations of the opposition parties on law and order situation, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Monday said, “The police will take appropriate action. They will take care of it. ”

Talking to reporters, Mr. Rangasamy said he had also asked his party MP R. Radhakrishnan to raise the issue of obtaining Statehood to the Union Territory in the current session of Parliament. He added that he would personally meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this purpose shortly.

Earlier, the Chief Minister distributed cheques to the tune of Rs. 9 crore under Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Financial Assistance Scheme meant for students who were selected through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) and studying in the private self-finance colleges. The principals of the colleges received the cheques from the Chief Minister.

The government has disbursed Rs. 30.84 crore, so far, under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Financial Assistance Scheme meant for students selected through the CENTAC and studying in private self-financing medical/engineering colleges in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Nearly 6,717 students — 875 of them from medical and 5,842 of engineering — have benefited from the financial assistance. Under this scheme, all medical students selected through the CENTAC are given a financial assistance of Rs. 2.25 lakh per annum. Similarly the engineering students are sanctioned a financial assistance of Rs. 25,000 per annum.

The scheme is implemented to ensure that no meritorious student can be deprived of higher education due to poor financial background.
