The government-run Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC) would be upgraded into a technical University and a sum of Rs.27 crore has been earmarked for infrastructure and other development works, Education Minister R. Kamalakannan said here on Wednesday.

Addressing the first year engineering students, he said that though the initiative should have been taken last year itself, it could not be done due to unavoidable reasons. He added that funds have been earmarked under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan’ (RUSA) Plan by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

‘Develop skills’

Mr. Kamalakannan also wanted the college authorities to ensure that students develop their skills. He pointed out that the college had come up on land provided by farmers and students should be grateful to them.

Revenue Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, who also holds the portfolio of Information Technology, said that there was every need to promote the skills of the students in English language. Lack of communication skill was a major concern and many students were unable to find placement during interviews.Mr. Shahjahan said that PEC was ranked 40 at the national level among engineering colleges in the country. There is a need to improve the ranking to be in the top 10 colleges in the country. He also deprecated the rote learning system and wanted the students to enhance their skills and make progress in education.
