The opposition Congress has alleged irregularities in awarding contracts and recruitment of employees in the Government Medical College at Kathir Gamam here. In a statement, AICC general secretary and former Union Minister for State V. Narayanasamy said after the AINRC came to power the college was run without a full time Director. It lacked specialists and amenities. As a result patients were being referred to Jipmer for tertiary treatment.

He said that a majority of the workers posted through the cooperative society in various positions were not qualified. A number of deficiencies pointed out by the Medical Council of India (MCI) relating to infrastructure facilities and staff strength were also not rectified.
