Indian Coast Guard personnel on Friday conducted a pre-monsoon preparatory camp for training local fishermen here at the Thengathittu Fishing Harbour.

Around 200 fishermen were trained in survival techniques by the Coast Guard personnel.

Coast Guard Commandant N.Somasundaram told The Hindu , “Most of the fishermen are good swimmers. However, they find it difficult to survive if their boats capsize in the mid-sea. They should know the techniques of survival until the Coast Guard team reaches them.”

The fishermen were also trained in raising distress alarm and using life-jackets and buoys.

“The monsoon is going to start soon. The techniques taught will be very useful to the fishermen,” Commandant Somasundaram said.

Representatives of the Fisheries and Marine Police Department participated in the programme.
