Workers of the Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a demonstration near Ambour Salai on Tuesday in protest against the “style of functioning” of Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi.
Leading the demonstration, CPI State secretary R. Viswanathan said the ongoing turf war between Ms. Bedi and the elected government had brought the administration to a standstill.
Mr. Viswanathan said that Ms. Bedi had been “misusing her position” at the Raj Nivas and acting like an agent of the RSS. Instead of working together with the elected government, the Lieutenant Governor had been causing hindrance to the government’s functioning. In a democracy, the people’s power is more important. But any deviation to confer powers on the Lt. Governor would be totally against democracy.
Mr. Viswanathan said that the Union government had not come forward to waive the legacy loans [outstanding Central loans availed by the Union Territory] to the tune of ₹7,300 crore, affecting people. The interest payable by the Government to the Centre was also increasing every year.
Although Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and his Cabinet colleagues had been frequently visiting Delhi and meeting Central Ministers, nothing positive had emerged, Mr. Viswanathan said.
