Joining their counterparts in Tamil Nadu, lawyers in Puducherry on Monday abstained from court proceedings and began a six-day stir in protest against the Law Commission recommending amendments to the Advocates Act.
The strike will continue till April 22, a spokesperson of the Puducherry Bar Association said.
The call for abstention from courts was given by the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The Bar Council of India called the proposed amendments draconian and unconstitutional, saying that the changes would create fear among lawyers. Proceedings in as many as 13 courts in Puducherry remained affected due to the strike.
