Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi on Saturday preferred a bus trip to a car ride “not only for austerity but also to promote a concept of joyful learning” while revisiting Thazuthali, a self-sustaining village in Tindivanam taluk.
Ms. Bedi and a team of officials headed for the village where the Srishti Foundation has been training villagers and intellectually challenged people in farming and vocational skills after undertaking a quick inspection of the state of the ‘Clean Kanakan’ initiative on the suburban lake.
Ms. Bedi wanted officials to learn collectively from the down to earth, yet innovative techniques and the long-forgotten traditional practices adopted by the self- sustaining village.
Expresses satisfaction
At the Kanakan lake, the Lt. Governor expressed satisfaction at the improvements, such as strengthening of the bund and clearing of hyacinth. She suggested a set of measures to be implemented over the week.
This included construction of benches along the walkway by the Oulgaret Municipality, formation of the Kanakan Student Police to take charge of specified areas of the lake for cleaning and maintenance, and submission of a proposal to the Tourism Department for lighting the walkway.
The Resident Welfare Association would also participate in the maintenance of the lake as part of the preparation for a function on February 3 to dedicate the lake to the community.
E. Vallavan, Labour Commissioner, and Rudra Gaud, Project Director, DRDA, Commissioners of the Puducherry Muncipality and Commune Panchayats and Block Development Officers accompanied the Lieutenant Governor.
