Many students in schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are wanting in communication skills, and this is hurting them in competitive examinations, K.S. Iyyappa, Deputy Director General, National Cadet Corps (NCC), said here on Tuesday.

“Therefore, the agenda of every school and college in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry should be to hone communication skills of students,” said Mr. Iyyappa, who heads the NCC Directorate of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar.

Commodore Iyyappa was sharing his thoughts with The Hindu during an annual inspection of the NCC Group Headquarters, Puducherry.

Commodore Iyyappa felt that the students’ command of English and Hindi was not up to the mark. “I am not expecting them to have a good knowledge of Hindi but at least they need to pick up their English if they need to perform well in interviews,” he said.

“This area should be the priority for the heads of schools and colleges,” he said.

Stating that the job enrolment in NCC was vacancy-based, the officer said the Directorate (TN, P and AN) had a sanctioned strength of 1,05,084 recruits and it is the third largest directorate in terms of staff in the country. He also said over the next couple of years the NCC would be augmenting its strength further. “I understand that more people want to join. There is though a restriction based upon our own needs. Merely adding recruits is not the way to provide good training. We scale up depending on the training needs in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” he said. Stating that the response from girls to enrolment was good, Commodore Iyyappa said, “As far as Puducherry is concerned, there is no shortage of girls as per the allotted vacancies.
