Professor M. Ramadass, the former Director of Studies of the University who is also contesting for the Lok Sabha polls as an independent candidate has condemned the incident of detaining a student for more than 27 hours. .
In a statement issued, he urged the Vice Chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy to conduct a thorough enquiry into the incident.
Even if the student entered the women’s hostel, the VC and registrar should have probed the incident and taken action instead of involving two professors and a security officer.
He said that Professor Hariharan was interfering in all matters of the University and even though the CBI had sought the VC’s permission to prosecute the professor, no action had been taken on the issue.
Even though the police had filed cases under various sections – 323, 324, 295 and 342 of the IPC, the persons were yet to submit themselves before the police. These persons should be kept away from gaining access to the VC’s office and also from interfering with the affairs of the university henceforth, the statement said.
Police visitOn Monday, the Senior Superintendent of Police Omvir Singh and Superintendent of Police (North) Praveen Kumar Tripathi visited Pondicherry University in order to check on the law and order situation there.
For the past one week, there has been so much of unrest in the University that the police personnel wanted to make sure that there was peace in the campus. Also as students will be appearing for their examinations, the police were called in aid the authorities to conduct the exam smoothly, Mr. Singh said.
They also inspected the car that was damaged by a group of students. The student protests, which were in full swing till Friday, have died down. According to a member of the student council, the students were awaiting for a response from the University on their demand to dismiss professor Hariharan and the other security officers named in the case. They would take a decision on Tuesday afternoon on whether to continue their protests or not.
