Employees of fair price shops in Puducherry staged a demonstration in front of the Cooperative Department in Ilango Nagar on Tuesday demanding the release of pending salary for the last 13 months.

P. Lakshmanswami, president of the Fair Price Shops Society Workers Cooperative Association said that about 660 employees working in around 313 ration shops were yet to receive salary for about 13 months. Though repeated representations were made to the authorities concerned, it had failed to evoke any response.

The agitators urged the government to bring all the fair price shops under various Cooperatives under the control of the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs to ensure immediate disbursal of pending salaries.

The employees also announced an indefinite strike from June 12 in support of their demands.
