Every Sunday is now yoga day at Raj Nivas

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi introduces free yoga sessions for the public

The Raj Nivas is aspiring to be a Yoga Nivas, with Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi introducing free yoga practice for the public from Monday.

Isha Yoga foundation has come forward to teach yoga and Raj Nivas has planned to categorise the event into three sections.

The first day will be devoted to children on Tuesday followed by women on June 21, the International Day of Yoga and the general public. The event will be held every Sunday at 6 a.m.

On the first day, as many as 75 students of Stansford and Vivekananda Higher Secondary School took part in the yoga practice. The entry for the participation will be on first come first serve basis limited to first 100 interested persons.

This new initiative of yoga practice will now continue through the year every Sunday. It will be open to public and those interested can assemble at the Raj Nivas lawn at 5.45 a.m.

 

Consequent to the decision of the United Nations on December11, 2014 and with the support of 177 nations, the first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015.

Meanwhile, yoga classes are being held in different parts of the city as a prelude to the International Yoga Day. The Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India has selected Advance Centre for Yoga (ACYTER), Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) as one of the premier centres for the official celebration of International Yoga Day.

The International Yoga Day is a month-long celebration at Jipmer. As part of this programme, ACYTER had organised a free yoga camp from May 21 to June 20 for public to participate and benefit.

The free yoga camp was conducted at three places: ACYTER at Jipmer main campus, rural health centre at Ramanathapuram, and urban health centre at Kuruchikuppam.

500 people trained

Yoga training was given in two sessions in all the three centres and about 500 participants participated in the month-long training programme, said Dr. S. C. Parija, Director, Jipmer. A national seminar-cum-continuing medical education on “Role of Yoga management in Diabetes, Hypertension and Depression” will also be organised by ACYTER at Mini-Auditorium, Academic Centre, Jipmer.
