Dredging work

The Public Works Department will take up dredging work totalling Rs.1.26 crore for a cumulative length of 211 km from Monday. Stating this at an official meeting here on Sunday, R. Kamalakannan, Puducherry Minister for Agriculture, said the work would be executed in consultation with the ayacutdars associations. This apart, the storm-water drains in the town which had got silted up, would be dredged to a length of 22 km at an expenditure of Rs. 20.50 lakh. He said that Rs. 9 crore would be spent under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for the district. Planting of saplings, setting up of 540 goat sheds, and other works would be taken up, he added.

Motorcyclist dies

in road accident

A 29-year-old youth Narayanasamy was killed when the two-wheeler he was riding hit a lorry on Perambalur–Athur Road on Saturday night. The incident took place when he was coming from Kurumbalur, the police said. The pillion rider, Sankar, had been admitted to the Government Hospital here. The Perambalur police have registered a case and are investigating.

‘Jallikattu’ prevented

Police foiled an attempt to organise ‘jallikattu’ at Konnanpatti near Ponnamaravathy on Sunday. According to police, unauthorised arrangements were made for the event and special police squads chased away the villagers marching towards the village along with their bulls.
