A total of 150 school students took part in painting and essay competitions organised by the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, on Saturday.

The competitions were held as part of World Diabetes Day.

The painting competition was held on, ‘Urbanisation can worsen diabetes, how? How can you make the city more conducive in preventing diabetes?’

The students had to write an essay on ‘Diabetes mellitus is an expensive disease. How can you cut down the cost of treatment?’

A quiz on science and general health was organised for teachers on the occasion. Teachers from 10 schools took part in the quiz competition.

Healthy lifestyle

According to a press release, competitive activities such as painting and essay writing on diabetic themes would improve the knowledge about diabetes and encourage them to adopt a health lifestyle. Sudha Jasmine, professor, Medicine Unit-III, CMC; Shandrila, professor and additional deputy dean of College of Nursing, CMC; and Durai Jasper, public relations officer, directorate, CMC were the judges for the painting competition, the release said.
