The Union government has planned to convert the East Coast Road from Chennai to Kanyakumari into a four-lane road, Union Minister of State for Surface Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan has said.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr. Radhakrishnan said the Centre was ready to widen the road from Chennai to Kanyakumari via Mamallapuram and Puducherry and convert it into a four-lane. The road is not coming under the National Highways and approval of State governments is necessary.
He wanted the cooperation of the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Governments to implement the four-laning project linking Chennai to Kanyakumari.
The ECR has several places of tourist interest and widening of the road would help in enhancing revenue to the Government, he said.
North East road development
The Union government has also planned a major road development project to be taken up for a stretch of 10,000 km in the North East in the current fiscal.
When asked about the opposition to the Land Acquisition Bill, he said that the Act was introduced by the British and the previous Congress government had not brought any amendments to the Act.
The Ministry for Surface Transport has also planned construction of two flyovers on the 100-feet road in the city.
A preliminary assessment has been made and a clear picture would emerge during my next visit, he said.
