In the last fortnight, two cases of abuse of minor girls have been reported in Puducherry.
A member of the Child Welfare Committee said that a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by 21-year-old Naveen in Vambakeerapalayam and a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) has been registered in Odiansalai police station.
“The victim’s mother was completely aware of the assault but failed to report to the police station.
“She did not allow the CWC members to counsel and rescue the child,” said the member. The CWC member added that Muthialpet police have also registered another case under POCSO Act against 19-year-old Rajesh Kumar for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. At least 87 cases involving sexual penetration have been reported by the CWC since April 2013-14 till July 20, 2017. During this period, nearly 25 cases were reported under the category of kidnap and rape and 20 under sexual abuse or harassment.
CWC report
In a report prepared by the CWC on crimes against children in Puducherry, they have restricted 29 child marriage cases, reported 10 cases under corporal punishment, eight under missing child or run away cases and eight under Immoral Trafficking Act.
