The Department of Forests and Wildlife, along with Shanthi Animal Welfare and Wild Life Conservation Trust (SAWWCT), an NGO, seized carcasses of eight species of birds, jungle cat meat, monitor lizard skin in Udayampet and Moorthy Nagar in Villianur on Sunday.
Chief Wildlife Warden, Department of Forests and Wildlife, G. Kumar said: “As per the directions from Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, the department with the help of SAWWCT, has been monitoring the illegal poaching activities in Puducherry. We carried out a campaign creating awareness against poaching and buying the endangered species of birds and animals over the last couple of days.”
The team headed by Agricultural Officer S.Selvanathan found Narikuravas selling birds and animals that were scheduled species under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, in Udayampet and Moorthy Nagar in Villianur.
A. Karthikprabu, founder-director, SAWWCT, said that there were carcasses of pigeons, dove, duck, grey heron, egrets, black-crowned night heron and meat of jungle cat, skin of monitor lizard ready to be sold.
“The elites and politicians are the buyers of this meat from Narikuravas,” he said.
