Call to spread awareness about Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act

One-day national seminar organised in Puducherry

A one-day national seminar on the “Roadmap for Effective Implementation of Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016,” was organised by the Higher Education for Persons with Special Needs (HEPSN), Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) and National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), here recently.

Heads of educational institutions in Puducherry, officials of government departments and public sector undertakings, staff and scholars of Pondicherry University participated. zM. Thanuja, Head of CSSEIP, delivered the welcome address. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Registrar (in charge) of Pondicherry University. He spoke about the importance and implications of the provisions of the legislation and the efforts taken by the University to effectively implement the Act. Chitra Shah, Director, Satya Special School, Puducherry, delivered the special address. Rajesh Ramachandran, Rehabilitation Officer (S&P), NIEPMD, Chennai, in his keynote address stressed upon the valuable services provided by NIEPMD in serving persons with more than one disability. Kamalesh Kumar Pandey, Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, spoke on the various legislations enacted for serving the disabled, right from the time of the British reign.

S.K. Prasad, Deputy Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, spoke on the steps taken by the Office of Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities to serve the cause of the disabled persons and called for spreading awareness about the 2016 legislation to all stakeholders concerned to ensure that the rights of disabled persons are upheld.

Himangshu Das, Director of NIEPMD, also spoke. K. S. Kuppusamy, Counsellor, HEPSN proposed the vote of thanks.

Entrepreneurship camp

The Department of Electrical Engineering of Annamalai University organised a three-day entrepreneurship awareness camp, sponsored by National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in association with Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad, under the DST-NIMAT Project 2017-18.

C. Antony Jayasekar, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology said that the students should develop knowledge and awareness about entrepreneurship. N. Kumarappan, Professor and Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, proposed the vote of thanks.

As many as 116 students of Faculty of Engineering and Technology went on a field research trip.
