A 35-year-old woman killed her two children by throwing them into an agricultural well at Simmaravuthankuppam near Kullanchavadi and attempted suicide. The names of the dead children were given as Gokul, 8, and Roshan, 7.

The woman was rescued by the local people and admitted to the Kurinjipadi Government Hospital.

Left in the lurch

Police gave the name of the woman as Saipapu, wife of Venkatesan.

Police said she took the extreme step upset over mounting debt. Venkatesan died two years ago and Saipapu had borrowed money from neighbours to sustain the family.

On Monday, Saipapu took the two children to a relative’s house at Simmaravuthankuppam.

She took Gokul and Roshan and threw them into an agricultural well.

She later jumped into the well.

Hearing their cries for help, local people saved Saipapu while the children drowned.
