June 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 05:04 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The Puducherry unit of Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) on Wednesday called upon the Government to conduct local body polls immediately in the Union Territory.

The state executive committee of BJP was held here under its president V. Saminathan and national secretary Mahesh Giri.

Passing a resolution, the party raised the demand to conduct the polls to local bodies in UT immediately and said that it would pave the way for implementation of all welfare schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

Reservation for women

The party also urged the UT Government to implement 50 per cent reservation for women in local body posts.

Condemning the government for its alleged failure to procure 50 per cent of seats from the private medical colleges and deemed universities, the BJP also demanded that immediate action should be initiated against those who allegedly fleeed innocent parents under the pretext of capitation fees.

The executive committee passed a resolution thanking the people of Puducherry who gave 2.4 per cent vote share to the party.

Later talking to press persons here, BJP unit president V. Saminathan said if the NR Congress aligned with the BJP, his party would have won a few seats in the recent polls while the AINRC might have even been able to better its prospects of staking a claim to form a Government.

Future strategy

Explaining the party’s strategy for future, Mr. Saminathan said the party would conduct local body polls forming an alliance with like-minded parties in UT.

The party’s national secretary Mr. Giri assured that there would not be any obstacles from the Central Government if the Chief Minister V.Narayanasamy pursued his vision to develop Puducherry.

Cooperation to L-G

He also congratulated all the initiatives launched by Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi and said his party would extend full cooperation to her.
