Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has directed the police to register a case against members of an outfit for denigrating Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam during a recent protest to condemn the killings of 12 persons in police firing in Thoothukudi.

Ms. Bedi gave the order based on a memorandum submitted by AIADMK Legislature Party leader A. Anbalagan seeking action against the outfit.

‘Bid to create trouble’

In the memorandum, Mr. Anbalagan said the members claiming to be part of a student outfit took out a procession and shouted slogans with the motive to instigate violence and to instil fear in the minds of the people.

The protesters wearing masks of Mr. Palaniswami and Mr. Panneerselvam denigrated the two AIADMK leaders during the protest.

The police, who accompanied the procession, did not make any attempt to remove the masks of the leaders.

Mr. Anbalagan has demanded that departmental action against the police personnel for failing to rein in the protesters.
