Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam founder Vijayakant garlanded the statue of B.R. Ambedkar on the occasion of his 123rd birth anniversary, in front of the old bus stand here on Monday.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Vijayakant said Ambedkar, an architect of the Constitution, advocated woman literacy as a prerequisite for the development of the society.
He also dreamt of creating a strong India. His dream could become a reality only when Narendra Modi became Prime Minister.
Mr. Vijayakant later proceeded to Salem.
At ChidambaramAt Chidambaram, BJP supporters led by district treasurer V.Rajarathinam and town secretary R. Thirumaran garlanded the Ambedkar statue on the North Main Road.
Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation B. Surender Mohan garlanded the statue at the Pudhukuppam road junction.
He recalled Ambedkar’s struggles for the uplift of the downtrodden and exhorted the gathering to follow his principles.
Mr. Mohan also pointed out that many of the children of the scheduled castes and the scheduled tribe employees were academically doing well.
They had obtained admissions to some of the prestigious educational institutions in the country such as the Indian Institute of Technology and the National Institute of Technology.
Ganesamurthy, general secretary of the NLC SC/ST Employees’ Welfare Association, and directors of the NLC were present during the occasion.
