AIADMK says the Lieutenant Govenror should ask the Speaker to hold a special session, if the latter rejected the Opposition’s plea on the same.

The Opposition AIADMK has urged the Speaker to convene a special session of the Assembly to enlist the views of the MLAs on tackling the financial crisis of the Union Territory.

AIADMK Legislature party leader A. Anbalagan told presspersons that Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy had pointed out that the situation was so grim that the government would not be able to pay salaries to its staff next month.

Mr. Anbalagan wanted to know what steps the government had taken to overcome the crisis. The Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi had suggested various austerity measures. The views of the MLAs should be considered as it was the problem of the government. In case the Speaker declined to concede the plea, Ms. Bedi should direct the Speaker to convene the House.

Flower show

He took exception to the government going ahead with its move to conduct the annual flower show next month.

How could the government defray the delicate financial position for such shows which would be of no help to the territorial administration?

Last year, the government had spent nearly ₹85 lakh on the flower show.

Referring to the recent attack on a mosque in Uppalam constituency, he said that various outfits and political parties had been politicising the incident and holding demonstrations and fanning communal tension.

It would only affect the peaceful atmosphere in the Union Territory, he added.
