Election officials here expect that there might be a need for installing two ballot units per control unit with each electronic voting machine for the Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency.

It has been necessitated because of more number of candidates filing nomination for the Puducherry constituency.

As per the current capacity of EVMs, each EVM can cater for a maximum of 64 candidates. There is provision for 16 candidates in a balloting unit. If the total number of candidates exceeded 16, a second unit has to be linked parallel to the first unit.

Sources said that chances for linking a second unit had arisen as the total number of candidates who filed papers until Friday stood at 18. More candidates were expected to file papers on Saturday.
