In a show of strength, the volunteers of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) took out a march past in the town on Sunday as part of Sangh Parivar’s call to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar and 1000 year jayanthi of Vaishnavaite saint Ramunuja.

The march past, happening after a decade in Puducherry, is part of Sangh Parivar’s larger plan to get a foothold in the Union Territory. The volunteers from RSS shakhas in Puducherry, Cuddalore and Villupuram in their trademark khaki uniform took out a march from Muthialpet to Anna Thidal.

The RSS and its political off-spring, the Bharatiya Janata Party have been making systematic efforts to expand its base by holding regular meetings and engaging with various caste organisations. In line with the central leadership’s plan to expand the political base, the local unit of BJP has outlined a strategy by dividing UT into five zones — Town, Oulgaret, Villianur, Ariankuppam and Karaikal to micro manage party affairs. Since then, the party had been holding its executive committee meetings in the five zones on a rotation basis.
