Avoid dumping waste into drains: Bedi to traders

February 06, 2017 07:52 am | Updated 07:52 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi on Sunday undertook an inspection of the Muthialpet market to follow up on a complaint of clogged drains, and also spent time with residents of an Old Age Home.

The Lt. Governor’s visit to Muthialpet was prompted by a complaint received from a resident in the locality seeking an end to the practice of the dumping of animal waste from the market into drains and for re-construction of existing drains constructed almost a decade ago.

Ms. Bedi, who was accompanied by Puducherry Municipal Commissioner and the PWD Executive Engineer, advised traders at the market not to dump the waste from the shops into the drain, as it chokes the drain and resulted in water stagnation.

Stagnant water was also posing a serious health hazard to the residents of the locality. Shop owners assured the Lt. Governor that they would henceforth store the waste in the bins in their shops and hand them over to conservancy workers.

A co-ordination meeting has been scheduled for February 6 with PWD, Municipality, Police and Market Association, for declogging the drains and re-construction of drains in Muthialpet market.

The Lt. Governor later visited Amaithi Illam, an old age home and Shakti Vihar, an activity centre run by Volontariat, an NGO.

She spent time with the residents of the Home and then visited Shakti Vihar, where more than 1300 students are being imparted vocational skills. Ms. Bedi complimented the Voluntariat for sponsoring the education of these students.
