Mumbai: The collective water stock in dams across Maharashtra on Thursday stands at 27.55%, which is more than double what it was on the same day last year.

According to a report by the State Water Resources Department, the water stock in dams on May 4, 2016 was 12.07% as against Thursday's stock of 27.55%. There are 3,255 dams of different capacities in the State. The Nagpur region has reported the lowest water stock with 14.93%, whereas the Konkan region has the highest stock of 52.9%,” the WRD report said.

Last summer, the State’s water stock on May 4 was 12.07%. Amravati division had 11.58 % water stock of its total capacity, while the Konkan division had 32.09 % water. The water level in Nagpur division was 10.75%, Nashik division 11.89%, Pune 13.32% and and Marathwada had 1.04 % water stock on May 4 last year. As per the WRD’s report, dams in Amravati division have 32.36% water stock as of today, while those in Konkan have 52.90% stock. In Nagpur division, the water storage is 14.93%, while in Nashik division it is 28.95%. Pune and Marathwada divisions have 21.46% and 32.15% water stock.

Except Pune and Amravati divisions, the remaining ones like Konkan, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur had received excess rainfall. “The excess rainfall at the end of the monsoon season helped in filling most of the dams up to their limits,” a WRD official said.
