Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli and his wife Andrea have been booked for allegedly confining their housemaid following an argument over payment issues.
The victim in her complaint alleged that she had been held captive for over three days after she protested her employers’ decision to defer payment and settle her earlier dues, said police sources. Identified as 30-year-old Soni Nafesing Sarsal, the complainant then approached the Bandra police on Saturday and got a case registered against Mr. Kambli and his wife.
“She accused that the couple had not allowed her to return home and wrongfully confined for three days, when she demanded her wages,” said Mumbai Police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni.
It is also alleged that the duo had threatened the woman that she would be harmed if she persisted with her demands. The case has been registered under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Mr. Kambli, a former middle-order batsman who later ventured into acting and participating in reality shows and even tried his hand in politics, has had brush with controversies several times in the past as well. Few months ago he drew flak on social networking site Twitter after some abusive tweets were posted from his handle. He later blamed it on a friend.
