A man and a woman were suspected to have drowned at Juhu and Versova beaches on Tuesday. Due to the similarities in both the cases, the police have initiated investigations to find out if there is a link between the deaths.

The first incident was reported after lifeguards stationed at Juhu beach noticed the body of a man floating around 7.55 a.m. and informed the police. Post-mortem at Cooper Hospital found no indications of foul play. The police later identified the deceased as Hasan Sheikh, a resident of Bangur Nagar in Goregaon.

“Sheikh used to sell garments near Goregaon railway station. When he did not turn up for work on Monday morning, his employer informed his family, who then approached the Bangur Nagar police. After we circulated pictures among our colleagues, the Bangur Nagar police on Tuesday reached us, leading to him being identified,” an officer with the Juhu police said.

Later at 10.45 a.m., the police were informed of the body of a woman being found at Versova beach. The body was first seen by civic workers cleaning the beach, who alerted the life guards. “The deceased was identified as Rignisha Vishal, a 19-year-old girl, who had gone missing from an orphanage in Goregaon since Sunday night. The authorities at the orphanage were going to file a missing person’s complaint but learned about the body being found,” an officer with the Versova police said.

The officer said no injuries were detected on Rignisha’s body during post-mortem, and no other indication of foul play has come to light so far.

Accidental death reports have been registered with the Juhu and Versova police stations.
